As the flood waters were rising, a man was on the front porch of his house. When another man in a row boat came by.

The man in the row boat told the man on the porch to get in and he'd be saved. The man on the porch said, "no, I have faith in God, and I am waiting on God to save me".

The flood waters kept rising and the man had to go to the second floor of his house. A man in a motor boat came by and told the man in the house to get in because he had come to rescue him. The man in the house said "no thank you. I have perfect faith in God and am waiting for God to save me."

The flood waters kept rising. Pretty soon the water was up to the man's roof and he got out on his roof. A helicopter then came by, lowered a rope and the pilot shouted down to the man to climb up the rope because the helicopter had come to rescue him. The man on the roof wouldn't get in. He said to the pilot "I have faith in God and I am waiting for God to rescue me."

The flood waters kept rising and the man in the house drowned.

When he arrived in the presence of the Lord, he asked God "where were you? I had perfect faith in you, but you let me drown."

God responded. "I sent you a row boat, but you did not get in. I sent you a motor boat but you would not get in,. Then, I set you a helicopter but you refused to climb aboard"

Classic Joke! I am sure you have heard it before. But it makes a clever point. When you ask God for help, be ready to receive it, however it comes.

This morning I read James 1. "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him." I said that's me! I need wisdom in a lot of areas of my life. So I prayed asking the Lord to give me wisdom. And honestly what I was wanting was a dramatic instant change in my thinking. I hoped that I would immediately have the wisdom on how to love more, serve more, make more money, grow my business and lose weight!

Then I was reminded of the above joke. Wisdom has come to me. Sometimes it though friendly advice or a Godly example in my life. Some times it's books I have read (or need to read).

But the greatest source of wisdom was in my hands. God's word, the Bible. Would I receive it? Would I dig in? Would I climb aboard the Bible train (ok that's cheesy).

So my prayer became. Psalm 119: 16 "Lord may I delight in your decrees; so that I will not neglect your word. May I be wise enough to receive and seek guidance and true wisdom where it is found"

Got Wisdom? It's closer then you think. I pray you are willing to receive it.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.(2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV)

P.S. Kate, my 3 year old daughter, saw the picture on this article then laughed and said. "That's not safe daddy"
She is Right. It's not safe to stand on the roof of your house or to reject wisdom when it is offered! GREAT WISDOM KATE!!!

Jesus is our Lord and King. Have you received that wisdom?

How do you respond with what has been given to you? - Luke 19

Luke 19

How do you respond with what has been given to you?

Zacchaeus was given friendship, and respond with Joy (v.6)

A land owner was given a colt and he surrendered it to the Lord (v. 33-34)

The Pharises called to teach God's people to Worship, demanded silence. (v.39)

Jesus was given a people, and he wept over their blindness. He did this for the positive reviews. King Herod had received positive feedback from putting James (brother of John) to death. So he wanted to kill more "Christians". But due to the holiday's (feast of unleavened bread) the King placed Peter in jail to wait for his execution.

DISBELIEF:
While Peter slept an angel woke him, and lead him out of the jail and to a place he recognized. Peter then ran to the house of many Christians who where praying for his release from prison. When he knocked on the door they did not believe he was there, for even though they were praying for his release they did not believe it would happen.

DEATH:
King Herod put the guards who "allowed" peter's escape to death. And later just before he was to give a kingly decree the crowd that was gathered to hear him said this is "the voice of a god, not of a man". Herod, loving the praise, received these words instead of giving Glory to God and then instantly received death.

"But the Word of God increased and multiplied" (Acts 12:24)

Despite sleeping Christians, Disbelieving Christians, and the best efforts of earthly kings. God's word is increasing, and it is changing the world. Acts 12 is a reminder that our situation and efforts whether good our bad can not prevent God's work from being done.

Go, be free, Serve THE King! You too may find yourself weeping while watching, because this is a heart breaking story. Truly the death of your child or any child is a extremely painful and sorrowful thing. I have a great deal of sympathy, empathy and compassion for this couple.

But, as you watch please listen to WHY they are crying. And to what they believe would have been a better option or out come to this story.

"All we wanted was to take our child home". The mother repeated these words several times in this video. She wept because her child died. She wept because her daughter suffered a painful death. Tears are appropriate in this situation. Tears are normal, healthy and good. No one wants to see a child suffer and die.

At just after 8 mins into this video things change. This is often begun about a day before the surgical procedure. Enlarging the opening of the cervix enables surgical instruments such as a curette or forceps to be inserted into the uterus.[2]

The second step is to remove the fetus (read 20 week old baby). Either a local anesthetic or general anesthesia is given to the woman(read mother, no anesthesia to child). A cannula is passed into the uterus. The cannula is attached by tubing to a bottle and a pump that provides a gentle vacuum to remove tissue (read 20 week old child) in the uterus. Forceps are inserted into the uterus through the vagina and used to extract any remaining tissue (read left over parts of child). This is more likely in pregnancies of 16 weeks or more. A curette is used to gently scrape the lining of the uterus and remove tissue (read left over parts of a 20 week old child) in the uterus. Lastly, the vacuum is used to ensure no fetal tissue remains in the uterus (such tissue can cause serious infections in the woman). The pieces are also examined to ensure that the entire fetus was removed.[2] (please note this means the child is now is "pieces" and a nurse must gather all the "pieces" of the now dead child out of the vacuum and put the child back together)

(Please note there are 2 other options and they are much ... Grace preceded my needed weight lose and habit change!

So for those who follow me on Facebook you already know my gaol is to loose 100 pounds this year. The short term goal is 2 - 3 pounds a week!

But here is some background info that you might find interesting.

A few weeks ago while I was making sales calls for work I meet Terry Stark owner of Chocolatrie STAM in Ames, IA. When I walked into his office he handed me a flyer for an event introducing new people to the "Take Shape for Life" program. Being a good sales man I instantly feigned* interest. But then after looking at the info thought I NEED TO GO TO THIS!!

I did, and the program inspired me to make small manageable changes in my eating habits, and cost me $0!!

Turned out this informational meeting was a gift of Grace from God at a very needed time in my life. You see I did not know how much I weighed until after this class. Stephanie brought home a scale for me to monitor my weight this week and according to this scale I weigh OVER 400 pounds!! I was shocked... MAD, and then very depressed...

But then I was reminded. God is watching over me. He inspired me to change my health habits even when I was NOT looking to do it.

Hope that makes since.

Well I am off....

Remember Grace is a free gift of God to an undeserving, unexpectant person.
Have you experienced the Grace of God??

Jesus is my King...
... is he yours?

*special thanks to Matt Heerema for reminding me of that word!

the wounded healer

In the book "the wounded healer" by Henri Nouwen there is a section called "Ministry to a Hopeless Individual".

In this section Henri makes some interesting comments regarding "being there" for someone. This section uses (i assume) a fictional account of a young seminary student speaking with an elderly farmer who is going in to major surgery. The patient is scared, seemingly ambivalent and most of all hopeless. Death for this patient is not a hopeful thing, nor is living because life means more lonely hard work on the farm.

How should one respond to someone like this is the question posed, or rather the foundational thought, behind this section.

Initially I really liked Nouwen's point, which was, that "being there" for someone as a friend in this Life during difficult times, and seeing them through it, gives a person HOPE, an eternal kind of hope. He then takes it the profound step further to say that speaking to someone about "being there" for someone IN DEATH is even greater still. I believe Henri means by this that we all die, and this fact is a unifier, something that makes us equal. He also means we will all be together one day after we leave this present world, and enter the new eternal Kingdom.

Again, initially, I liked this Idea. In fact I loved it and the Lord even allowed me to ponder this idea when I meet a man in town just a week ago. He and I talk about death as he shared the lose of his son in the war in Iraq.

But after pondering this Idea in it now real life context. I find myself not as "in love" with the idea. You see, Henri and I disagree in a very fundamental area. Henri believes in "universal salvation". He believes that the Substitutionary death of Jesus Christ on the cross was for the Sin of the WHOLE world thus all men everywhere and for all time are made right with God and will eternally live with him.

I don't believe that. It does sound wonderful, and at times can seem true, but is not. My simple position is God is Just, and being so he will Judge disobedience, and rebellion in the world. And since he is an eternal God is Judgement will be eternal.

... but I am getting a bit off point.

You see for me to promise to "everyone" that I will see them again after death is to assume we will all be together. And well... that is not true...

So Henri and I disagree.... but If we first help people to be reconciled to God through the gospel then.. and only then can we speak in these terms...

well go to to go.... my Laptop battery is dieing.... so... Good Night...

I Love you... We did the basic small talk at first, then it quickly got a bit serious. You see he has 3 sons, my age and older. Two are Soldiers in the US Army, but only one is still alive. His middle son, "stubby" was killed by a road side bomb in Iraq. He was the lead gunner and would say "If I can make it through, then my troops can make it". His father was proud of him, and rightly so. Stubby fought for his country, and for his fellow soldiers, and that is a noble task. Stubby also loved kids. Which makes part of this story extra sad. Because his first and only son was born while he was in Iraq and Stubby never saw his son face to face.

Stubby's father, whose name I don't know told me another great story about his son this evening. When Stubby was in Kosovo he was serving near a school where all the children had only pencils an inch long, and scraps of paper to write on. Stubby was so moved to help these kids he called his dad back home and requested new pencils and paper. When those supplies arrived the kids were over joyed! Stubby reported the kids in Kosovo didn't even know they made paper that BIG!! Watching Stubby's father relay this story to me with a big smile brought me, a stranger to this family, JOY.

Then Stubby's father was moved, almost, to tears. I am sure he was reminded that is son is gone. And worse, his boy, who loves kids so much, never got to play with his son.

This post is not just to tell you a powerful story. But to ask you a question.

You see as I was walking to the park this evening I was praying. Praying for this City, and asking the Lord Jesus what this town needed. The easy Sunday school answer is Jesus. This town needs Jesus. But how do they receive Him? How do they meet Him? How they know Him?

The man I meet tonight is not unlike many in town. Semi-retired, blue collar guy with alcohol on his breath and in his hand taking care of his grand kids because his son, and his x-wife are too busy at the moment to care for their own child. ... but I am getting off track.

This man has a need. He has a deep hurt. He is struggling with lose... more accurately... Death. I could tell it was very top of mind for him because one of the first words he said to me was "he (his grandson) and my old hunting dog really played well together". He started our conversation talking about death. His old hunting dog died two years ago, one year BEFORE Stubby Died. You see, death of a dog is easier small talk then the death of your son. But when death is on your mind it's hard not to talk about it.

Ok, back to the question that is in my mind. How do I show this man, Stubby's dad, Jesus?

I am not sure at this moment, but I am sure it wasn't to quiz him on the 4 spiritual laws, or to ask him if he considers him self to be a "good person". Further more with the death of his son so deep in his mind in his mind, any discussion of the after life would bring up questions of where is my son NOW? Is he in Heaven? Is he in Hell?

Those are heavy questions. Ones I can not truly answer.

Conclusion. I need to make a follow up appointment with Stubby's father and help him grieve the lose of his son Stubby. And maybe, by God's grace, Stubby's father can meet Jesus.

until next time... pray for Stubby's dad.

anybody read this blog?

I forgot I had this.... if you know me personally and follow this... please comment to let me know...

Neve Give UP! I have been repeatedly reminded of the suffering of children. As you all know my wife and I are foster parents. Our childern have come from homes where conditions where bad. Each child's story is unique but they all have on thing in common: Pain.
I have had lots of moment of tears today, and lots of prayers for a kind and tender heart.
and then I get one of those "pray for our solders" email forwards. and it was super cute. Tons of pictures of American soldiers playing and having fun with kids, and them BAM the Picture above.

My heart is so heavy today. I broke down completely when I say that photo.

Please pray for the Children. Pray for the Children of Iraq, and the kids in your neighborhood that could be in danger. Please pray. Really! Don't Just read this little blog cause it came up in your "reader"... Pray.

It is times like these I am looking for Jesus to Come. Not because I want to be "rescued" from this world, but because when Jesus COMES this WHOLE WORLD WILL BE REDEEMED! ALL OF IT! No more tears. The cowboys could not make a touchdown all day?
so I blame the Dolphins for the Cowboys loss.
Why couldn't they just lose again.. what would it have mattered?

Or.. you could blame Jessica Simpson like everyone else.

Reading Poetry to a 21month old

My wife told me that my foster Daughter pick a book for me to read for her, and it was "Sailing alone around the room" by Poet Billy Collins.
We both laughed, and then I realized, well maybe. I mean, one of my favorite poems is quite funny, and includes a dog... and she loves dogs!
Here is the Poem:

Another Reason Why I Don't Keep A Gun In The House

The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
He is barking the same high, rhythmic bark
that he barks every time they leave the house.
They must switch him on on their way out.

The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
I close all the windows in the house
and put on a Beethoven symphony full blast
but I can still hear him muffled under the music,
barking, barking, barking,

and now I can see him sitting in the orchestra,
his head raised confidently as if Beethoven
had included a part for barking dog.

When the record finally ends he is still barking,
sitting there in the oboe section barking,
his eyes fixed on the conductor who is
entreating him with his baton

while the other musicians listen in respectful
silence to the famous barking dog solo,
that endless coda that first established
Beethoven as an innovative genius.

So, what do you think? would a 21 month get it?

I seem to think if I could make a cartoon out of this she would watch it and laugh.
I mean... come on "the famous barking dog solo"... that's a funny image!

what do you think? should I read it to her?
